It’s kinda weird that I have to start my movie blog with a movie that includes incest, bestiality and pedophilia. I’m pretty sure there are many ways to look at what actually happened in the movie but those three politically incorrect lights bling blinged right away after an hour through the movie. Since this blog is not about a movie review, I’m gonna leave the dvd backcover or other awesome movie blogs to give you ratings and reviews. This blog is more of things the movie reminds me of, be the movie good or bad. Oh, by the way, the name of the movie is “Splice”, yet another movie with a mysterious choice of role in Adrien Brody’s acting career.
So, the whole drama in the movie happened all because they wanted a new type of protein from a living specimen, whose DNA is fused from different animals. Greed made its entrance when the ‘creators’ try to insert human DNA into the mixture and what have you got? A protein strong enough to cure diseases like cancer. Staying true to the genre ‘thriller’, it’s not that much of a moment until you see blood and lives killed in the movie. I guess it’s goodbye to the good intentions for upgrading proteins which could kill cancer while the breathing resource, aka the creature, is pretty much doing the killing job. The neighborhood is not safe anymore and with a new neighborhood comes a new adaptation that we all could pretty much learn to have it in us. Gotta love pause buttons by the way, I never knew the mixture of DNA has one of a leaf! A bird, a horse, a fish, a kangaroo, a lizard and a snail, I understand but a leaf???
This reminds me of upgrades we all want to with good intentions. I had this thought running in my head long ago. I’ve seen a lot of upgrades being done to a lot of things in my life. It reminds me of the scenario I heard from one of those people who worked for one of those NGO’s that was helping cyclone affected victims. Being one of the third world countries, some people in the village mistook a lime scented sanitary pad for a cooking scent-maker or one of those spices. Given the product without a manual and even if there was to be a manual, given we do have different levels of intelligence, it’s only fair enough to have an unpredictable probability figure of those who are going to grab the idea that it IS not for cooking but it’s for women toiletry usage.
I guess we all want to be heroes. We all want to change the world into a better place. And from the first display of effectiveness, those who were given the chance to experience the ‘change’ would be pretty much amazed by the whole new discovery. Like I find an ipod amazing after it came out, my mom still finds it horribly difficult to stay for five minutes in front of a puter. And no matter how much I used to worship technology, nothing can stop me from craving for new toys to come out. The worst thing is not being able to afford these toys once they pop out. Will I be able to handle a life without being able to have sufficient amount of money to keep upgrading my gadgets?
The movie made me realize how we wouldn’t have been if we had not known of diseases which exist. How our body would be immune to a lot of virus in the air if only it wasn’t pampered to a dosage of antibiotics for any small sickness. How the scientists wouldn’t have to create this creature to produce strong proteins if we only hadn’t known of such diseases. I guess sometimes, it just feels pretty awesome to think about our lives without as many complications as there is now and these ‘complications’ derive from nothing but our brains and the ‘can’t be helped’ feeling of wanting to upgrade. But then again, it does feel good knowing new stuffs, doesn’t it?
